England have sought explanation from the match referee over the Decision Review System (DRS) after Mark Stoneman's controversial dismissal on day one of the third Ashes Test in Perth.

The DRS has been under the spotlight throughout a series marred by a litany of contentious decisions. Stoneman's controversial dismissal added to the list after he was originally given not out trying to evade a Mitchell Starc bouncer. Replays confirmed there was no hot spot mark but a faint noise on 'snicko' was detected, which was enough for third umpire Aleem Dar to overturn the decision.

Joe Root, England's captain, was visibly upset at the decision and it is is understood he - along with coach Trevor Bayliss - sought clarification with Richie Richardson, the match referee, after play on day one.

England are believed to be unhappy at the lack of consistency over the DRS fuelled by several contentious decisions in the Adelaide Test - most notably when Shaun Marsh being reprieved early in his innings despite looking plumb LBW. The decision proved a major turning point in the match as Marsh went on to make an invaluable century under pressure.

A bone of contention for England revolves around the differences used by the respective host broadcasters. Channel 9 in Australia use HotSpot as part of its DRS technology, which is not implemented by Sky Sports in the UK.

The ICC are believed to be keen to install a universal DRS to iron out the differences but have been met by resistance from member boards due to cost factors.
